The Importance of a Regular Dental Checkup

Your next dental checkup is not something you should put off for any reason. You may think you do not have any cavities and that everything else is in order when it comes to your oral health. Still, everyone should see the dentist regularly. These appointments have many benefits not just for your teeth and gums but for your overall wellness. This should be a priority for you and your family.

What to expect

Some people have anxiety about going to the dentist’s office for a dental checkup. Often, people feel this way if they have not gone in several years. The visit is virtually pain-free. It starts off with a series of X-rays, which will reveal any issues with the teeth and surrounding tissue.

The hygienist will then clean the teeth deeply with an ultrasonic brush and an abrasive toothpaste. With a similar tool, the hygienist also goes in between teeth and along the gumline to remove plaque and tartar buildup. Flossing may also be a part of this visit, followed by a fluoride treatment (usually for younger patients). The dentist then examines the patient and checks for tooth damage, oral cancer, and other conditions.

Spotting problems the patient cannot see

Sometimes, a person knows they have a cavity or gum disease. Tooth pain, bleeding gums, or other obvious symptoms can signal such an issue. However, it often takes a dental checkup to identify emerging abnormalities and dysfunctions in the mouth. During these exams, the dentist may see concerns on an X-ray or during the hands-on exam. Without this visit, a patient may not even realize these problems exist. Eventually, the condition could worsen.

Getting regular treatment

Daily brushing and flossing are critical to maintaining good oral health. However, even these alone are not enough. Going to the dentist’s office every six months for a dental checkup is an effective way to stay on top of healthy teeth and gums. People with mild problems can eliminate them. Patients with severe oral health issues can control them and get the help they need. The dentist can also use these visits as an opportunity to set up appropriate treatment plans for bite dysfunctions, bone loss, tooth loss, and other dental health challenges.

Establishing the right habits

Once a patient starts going to the dentist’s office for a dental checkup, it becomes less difficult to come back the next time. Eventually, the person is on a good schedule of coming twice a year. Regular visits can also motivate the person to do well with brushing, flossing, and limiting sugar intake. These habits can last a lifetime and be examples for other family members as well.

The dental checkup: an important part of your health routine

Taking good care of your teeth and gums is as vital as taking care of any other part of your body. Stay on top of your dental appointments. If you have not seen the dentist in a while, make sure you call today to schedule a visit.
