What Are the Side Effects of Dental Botox®?

Do you think that dental Botox® may be right for you but are wondering about the potential side effects? It is necessary to understand any side effects of a new medical procedure. This allows you to be prepared in case you were to experience any of these side effects during or after the procedure.

About dental Botox®

Learning more about how dental Botox® can help you is important, as the more you understand about a certain dental procedure, the more likely you will experience a successful outcome. Botox® includes a toxin that is used in small doses in order to temporarily paralyze muscles. This temporary paralyzing effect can be beneficial when it comes to treating certain issues, like headaches caused by temporomandibular problems and tooth erosion problems caused by grinding and/or clenching. It can also be used to help minimize wrinkles in the forehead and eye area.

What are the side effects of dental Botox®?

The list below includes common side effects that someone may potentially experience when undergoing dental Botox® treatment from their dentist.

Swelling

Swelling is a common side effect, as most people who undergo Botox® treatment will experience a certain amount of swelling. Any swelling that a patient experiences is due to the actual injecting of the Botox®, which is considered to be normal and therefore something most patients can expect to experience. Swelling should only last somewhere in between 15 minutes and a few hours after undergoing the procedure.

Bruising

Bruising is another common side effect. Any bruising that a patient experiences will occur near the injection area and is considered to be expected due to the fact that injections were made. Bruising tends to be minor, with most patients experiencing bruising for about five or six days. Since any bruises tend to be noticeable, many patients choose to take a few days off from work until any bruising begins to clear up.

Headaches

A minor headache is something many patients experience. While most patients can expect their minor headache to go away within a few hours’ time, some patients do not experience relief from a minor headache for up to three days. While very few patients will experience a moderate or severe headache that can last for a few weeks, it is possible for patients to experience an ongoing headache as a side effect of dental Botox®.

Allergic reactions

While an allergic reaction is rare, it is possible for someone to experience this side effect when undergoing dental Botox®. Common signs of an allergic reaction include extreme itching, severe dizziness, a rash and trouble breathing. Since an allergic reaction can be quite serious, it is essential for those who are considering Botox® treatment to understand more about a possible allergic reaction.

Is dental Botox® the right option for you?

Now that you understand more about dental Botox®, do you feel that this is the right option for you? While there are definitely a number of benefits that come with choosing Botox® to address certain issues that you have, there are also a number of potential side effects. You may experience one side effect or many, making it a good idea for you to first make a consultation appointment with a dentist for more personalized information.
